STARR

The STARR program is designed to meet the needs of higher-needs individuals who may display challenging behaviours due to a number of factors, including autism and anxieties. The program focus is on supporting individuals to be more successful in their activities and learning.

Strategies

  • Tailor the environment to address the unique needs of individuals; quiet sitting spaces, social gathering space, low lighting, use of exercise bikes are all environmental adaptions that help different clients.
  • Consistently follow individualized supports and routines through transition times; this can be the key to a successful day for many individuals

Activities

  • Volunteering in a range of not-for profit agencies; hot lunch program, handing out toiletries at a shelter, gardening, recycling, paper delivery
  • Fundraising for Christmas food hampers administered through other city agencies
  • Gardening and sharing profits and produce with those less fortunate.
  • Recreation; music, swimming, walking
  • Increasing communication; learning sign language
