Discovery

Social and communication skills are a key focus for the Discovery team. Staff work with clients on a variety of visual cues, verbal prompts, picture schedules, signing, and structured activities to support social interactions and personal relationships.

Strategies

  • A weekly schedule that is varied and yet both routine and predictable
  • Staff create a fun positive environment
  • Use of visual schedules to assist with the progression through the day
  • Tailoring the environment to address the unique needs of individuals; quiet sitting spaces, social gathering
  • space, low lighting, opportunities for individual ‘down-time’ activities
  • Support of individuals to take part in group activities and develop social connection

Activities

  • External facilitators lead sign language and music therapy groups
  • Promote health and wellness through informal sports, swimming, and walking
  • Music, drama, and recreation are an integral part of this program; used to encourage clients to participate in a wide range of activities
  • Individuals are encouraged to participate in many community activities of their choosing.
  • Primarily recreational, but also opportunities for volunteering in the community
