Lifestreams Learnings

LifeStreams Learning is a post-secondary educational program designed for young adults with more moderate cognitive disabilities. Its goal is to provide enhanced and highly individualized learning, with the aim of increasing life success through improved opportunities for inclusion, independence and social adjustment.

Learning is individualized. Curriculum-based learning programs often do not work for individuals with cognitive impairments because curricula make broad assumptions about generalized learning capacity. But individuals with cognitive impairments often have narrowly specific learning capacities and identifying and developing these inherent, individual capabilities best supports overall learning.

Strategies

  • Instruction through a process of discovery and learning helps each learner find their most efficient learning path and objectives
  • Learning is managed using a data management tool in collaboration with Edudata, a research group in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia
  • Learning activities in LSL are diverse and often hands-on, with a focus on building practical confidence and social aptitude alongside specific practical skills
  • LSL also uses "badging," the online, third-party credentialing system for informal learning, to ensure that each learner has a publicly validated, on-line learning profile to establish his or her competencies for the wider community
  • The program is specifically designed to enhance dignity and the sense of self-worth for individuals, enabling them to take charge of their own development through a learning initiative that is both practical and innovative
  • Learners build the skills they need to actively address their own problems and engage more broadly in community on a fair and equal basis

Activities

  • Arts-based learning strategies
  • Transit and transportation training
  • Horticulture
  • Photography
  • Volunteering in not-for-profit agencies
  • Personal management and life skills training
